Description

Wooden Ships Comments on this Morgan Giles Day Boat

20’ keel boat designed and built by Morgan Giles Ltd of Teignmouth, Devon in 1948.

She is believed to be one of 3 boats built to this design, quite clearly a smaller version of the popular and larger West Channel class from the same designer.

She is an elegant, fast and fun day boat, easily sailed by one person but could be raced with 3 quite easily.

She went through a very detailed rebuild between 1996-8, work that was well documented in a Classic Boat article of June 2004.

The previous owner fitted a new alloy rig from AllSpars with new standing rigging.  More recently she has had an E-Propulsion electric pod drive fitted so that she has motorised power without the hassle of an outboard motor hanging over the stern.  This sleek and quiet drive system is great for getting in and out of the river, and although it does not offer long distance motoring, this is not the sort of boat that requires that sort of capability.

Twin axle road trailer for the boat so she can be easily transported on the road.  Trailer has been recently refurbished with all new axles, brakes and bearings, rated to 2.5 ton.  Her all up weight with the trailer will be less than 2 tons so can be easily towed by a moderate size car.

A great fun little boat which turns heads and brings much joy to her crew.

Construction

Carvel planked in Silver spruce fastened with copper clench nails.  Fine Canadian Rock Elm timbers spaced at only 4” centres.

External iron ballast keel of approximately 0.5 ton fastened with galvanised keel bolts.  New bolts in 1998.

Grown oak floors across the centreline fastened through with large copper rivets.  Keel bolts pass through these oak floors.

Yacht laid teak deck with mahogany covering boards and king plank, laid over a marine plywood subdeck.  Foredeck and narrow side decks plus aft deck.  Bronze fairleads and mooring cleats.

Varnished mahogany toe rails set slightly inboard from the deck edge.

Varnished mahogany cockpit coamings around the cockpit.

Slatted varnished mahogany cockpit seats.

Mahogany sole boards in the cockpit with 2 small teak gratings.

Transom hung mahogany rudder with a laminated tiller.

Rig

Spars

Fractional Bermudan sloop rig on a deck stepped alloy mast from AllSpars.  Wooden compression post below the deck to take the mast forces.

Slab reefing alloy boom from AllSpars.

Rigging

Stainless steel standing rigging to internal bronze chain plates.

Halyards run through turning blocks at the base of the mast and terminate at jamming cleats at the forward end of the cockpit which are easy to reach even when single handing.

Bronze mainsheet horse across the aft deck.

Sails

Mainsail, genoa, jib and spinnaker all new in 1998 from Ratsey and Lapthorn.

Winches

2 x Antal W6 winches on the mast.

Pair of Andersen Stainless steel sheet winches on the side decks.

Machinery

E-Propulsion pod drive electric motor installed on the port quarter.

Small leg fastened through the hull with a built in electric motor.

Standard E-Propulsion outboard motor battery connects to the system for power.
