Description

Wooden Ships Comments on this Gaff Sloop Day Boat

Built by HJ Phillips & Son of Rye in 1938 as a sailing tripper boat, understood to have been built for Folkestone and is thought to have been the last working sailing boat built by the yard.

She was sold to the Medway in 1946 where she was a member of the Benfleet Sailing club wth her then owner A.F. ‘Buck’ Taylor who extensively cruised the local waters.  At this time she had a small coachroof with a cabin.  After his death the family took her to the Norfolk Broads where she fell on hard times and was bought by a young shipwright in 1989.  Then commenced a major refit which was completed in 1993.

Major rebuild in 1993 with full documentation for that work.  Included a new stem, new sections of keel, new centreboard box, many new timbers and replacement of the sheer strake with all new deck structure.  The gaff sloop rig was designed and made at that time to replace her original bermudan rig.

Professionally maintained in recent years and presented in nice condition.  With a suitable trailer the boat could easily be transported behind a suitable vehicle which could help reduce running costs and simplify ownership.  With her lifting centreboard and drop plate rudder, she has very shallow draft and can be kept on a drying mooring with no issues, again reducing the mooring costs and opening up more berthing options.

Construction

Clinker planked in Archangel White Pine all copper rivet fastened to steam bent oak timbers.  It is believed the Philips yard had won a contract to make 100,000 Whaler oars for the Admiralty so obviously had some nice timber left over which they used for the planking.

Varnished mahogany transom.  Oak centreline structure with a galvanised stemhead fitting.

Sheathed plywood decks finished in cream deck paint.

Varnished iroko rubbing band and part toe rails.

Varnished iroko coamings around the cockpit with oak sampson posts on the quarters.

Varnished mahogany centreboard case with a galvanised centreplate.

Varnished mahogany centre thwart with storage lockers under.

Transom hung mahogany drop plate rudder with galvanised hangings.  New pintle 2025.

Rig

Gaff sloop rig on a deck stepped varnished pine mast.

Varnished wooden boom. The gaff yard is a carbon fibre windsurfer mast with a spruce veneer making it very light and strong.  Galvanised goose neck and mast fittings.

Stainless steel standing rigging with bronze rigging screws to external bronze chain plates.

Tan terylene mainsail and jib.

Wyckham Martin roller furling on the jib to the stemhead.

Mainsheet to a bronze horse across the aft deck and tails to a block midships which means the sheet is easy to handle when on the helm.

A well at the aft end to take an outboard motor.

Mercury 5hp Saildrive outboard engine.
